How I Developed the Visual Identity of ALUF Pictures, my Production Company

The visual identity of ALUF Pictures was not born directly on a computer. Like almost everything I create, it began in my notebook.

That is where I gather references, concepts, symbols, and ideas before making any definitive aesthetic decisions. I enjoy investigating the origins of words, their meanings, and the stories they carry. Since this was a deeply personal project, I had the freedom to build the brand from the very choice of its name.

The Meaning Behind the Name ALUF

The name ALUF emerged from its connection to my first name, Alef. Aleph (א) is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and traces its roots back to the earliest Semitic writing systems.

During my research, I found references associating the primitive form of Aleph with the image of an ox’s head, a symbol linked to strength, leadership, and fertility. It was this interpretation that captured my imagination and became the starting point for developing the identity of the production company.

Years later, further readings revealed another equally fascinating meaning: in modern Hebrew, aluf (אַלּוּף) is a term used to designate a leader or a high military rank, comparable to the commander of thousands of soldiers.

Despite this later discovery, I remained connected to the original interpretation, one more closely tied to ancestry, primitive symbols, and the relationship between imagery and the origins of language.

The Influence of Ancient and Cave Art

My decision was to follow a visual path inspired by ancient inscriptions and essential forms.

I have always been fascinated by cave paintings, hieroglyphs, and the ability of ancient civilizations to condense complex ideas into remarkably simple and memorable symbols. I wanted the brand to embody that same sense of permanence and timelessness.

The bison therefore became the project’s primary visual reference. Rather than representing a specific animal, it came to symbolize strength, origins, and identity.

From Notebook Sketches to Vector Design

After developing the concepts and producing countless studies on paper, I moved on to the digital stage.

I used vector design software to build the final symbol, applying principles of proportion, balance, and geometric composition. My goal was to preserve the organic essence of the initial sketches while achieving the precision required for a solid and functional visual identity.

Every line was refined so that the design could maintain its simplicity without sacrificing conceptual depth.

A Symbol That Represents My Journey

The final result was a set of forms inspired by ancestral graphic symbols that, when brought together, create the figure of a bison.

More than a logo, the visual identity of ALUF Pictures brings together elements that I consider fundamental to my own creative journey: the investigation of origins, the value of storytelling, the power of symbols, and the pursuit of an authorial aesthetic shaped by historical and cultural references.

Whenever I look at this mark, I am reminded that great ideas still begin in the same way: with a few blank pages and a notebook always close at hand.
